Sustainability in Indonesia.

Who we are

About Gringgo

A tech-powered nonprofit working with communities and governments since 2015 to turn waste into data, energy, and opportunity.

Gringgo's vision

Vision

A livable future where technology is leveraged to power communities' resilience and nature's preservation. We believe technology should be the driving force behind stronger, more resilient communities and a better-protected natural world -- not a substitute for either.

Mission

To build ethical, inclusive digital infrastructure that empowers communities to solve environmental challenges. We do this by developing tools that are easy to use and genuinely accessible, training and educating the people who will use them, partnering with governments, NGOs, and businesses, and continuously improving our solutions based on what communities tell us they need.

What guides us

Our Values

Bold Innovation, Trustworthy, Collaboration, and Continuous Learning -- see the Values section below for what each of these means in practice.

⚙️

Bold Innovation

We build tech that solves problems others ignore. We don't chase trends -- we prototype what's needed, and we do it where it's hardest.

🔗

Trustworthy

We earn trust by staying, listening, and delivering what we say we will. We don't overpromise, and we never extract.

🤝

Collaboration

We don't build tools for users -- we build them with users. We listen more than we pitch, and treat every stakeholder, community, funder, or coder as a co-creator.

🔄

Continuous Learning

We learn by doing. We reflect often. We fail forward, in public and with intention.

Where we come from

Our History

Mapping the Invicible

2016

Mapping the Invicible

In 2016, Gringgo piloted Bali’s first informal waste mapping project. This work helped reveal the hidden networks, routes, and community actors behind waste systems — and became an important foundation for our later digital platform development.

With Tech and Communities to Create a Liveable Future

Gringgo Indonesia was founded in 2015 to create innovative solutions for sustainability. We started with a simple startup weekend project, using mobile apps and AI to tackle the waste crisis in Bali. Our first app, helped waste workers identify, sort, and report recyclables to increase their income. From there, we grew into a tech-powered nonprofit that works with communities and governments to lead sustainable solutions that work. Today, our work goes beyond waste. We build systems that help entrepreneurs streamline their waste bank businesses, pilot microfactories that convert waste into renewable energy, and train students and governments to adopt a sustainability mindset. Whatever the area, we keep asking ourselves the same question: how can we leverage innovation to empower communities to create the livable future they envision?
GIS for City Waste System

2017

GIS for City Waste System

In 2017, Gringgo launched the Secondary Cities GIS project with Denpasar City and partners, helping digitize waste banks and collection routes citywide. This marked an early shift from field mapping into city-level data infrastructure.
Ai on the frontline

2019

Ai on the frontline

In 2019, Gringgo was selected as Indonesia’s only winner of the Google AI Impact Challenge and one of the top 20 globally. This supported the development of an AI-powered waste recognition tool designed to help identify recyclable materials and strengthen waste data systems.
Tackling Ocean Plastic

2019

Tackling Ocean Plastic

In the same year, Gringgo rolled out project with USAID, using crowdsourced waste data to support better source separation and ocean plastic reduction efforts in Denpasar.
Women Leading the Change

2021-2022

Women Leading the Change

From 2021 to 2022, Gringgo launched Wanita Indonesia Bisa, incubating 24 womenpreneurs through digital skills, mentorship, and sustainability training. The program also partnered with BenihBaik.com to distribute microgrants that helped SMEs scale and integrate recycled materials
Policy Meets Culture & Green Infrastructure

2023

Policy Meets Culture & Green Infrastructure

In 2023, with GIZ support, Gringgo helped local villages in Bali adopt a customary law mandating waste separation and collection. The program also initiated simple program to manage organic waste, reduce emissions, and turn waste management into a community climate solution.
Smarter Cities

2023

Smarter Cities

Also in 2023, Gringgo partnered with global association of GSMA and local government in Bali to digitize waste management and convene discussions between government, private sector actors, and communities. This strengthened Gringgo’s role as a bridge between field realities, data, and decision-making.
Transforming Waste to Value

2024

Transforming Waste to Value

In 2024, under the APAC Sustainability Seed Fund 2.0, Gringgo piloted a city-scale ecosystem combining microfactory technology, digital tools, school programs, and supply-chain partnerships — proving that waste can support livelihoods and climate action.

2025

From Pilot to Platform

By 2025, Gringgo’s AVPN-supported work had grown into a broader sustainability platform: digital waste monitoring across 4 cities, more than 570,000 kg of waste processed through monitoring systems, 20+ business users digitized, Biocore briquette pilots, and community education programs reaching 332+ students, teachers, and staff.
