2019 - 2021
In 2019, Gringgo stood among global innovators as the only Indonesian organization selected among 20 winners from over 2,600 applicants worldwide in the Google AI Impact Challenge. We came home with a mission: revolutionize waste management with artificial intelligence.
Our mobile AI-powered image recognition system identifies, classifies, and assigns value to waste in real time, using just a phone camera:
Indonesia has over 1 million independent waste workers, often working without coordination or real-time pricing data. This tool puts that information directly in their hands -- and lays groundwork for tracking materials back to their source with QR codes and barcodes.
"If your bathtub is overflowing, you don't just mop the floor -- you turn off the tap." — Gringgo Indonesia, Co-Founder
Google.org provided funding, mentorship, and access to Google's AI tools; Google Launchpad and Cloud teams helped develop and deploy the machine learning models; Datanest, our local data science partner, supported image labeling and system architecture.
Training the model on thousands more waste images, expanding real-world testing with households and students, and exploring real-time dumping monitoring -- starting from Bali toward a nationwide rollout.
