Denpasar produces over 1,000 tonnes of waste daily, with landfills near capacity. In partnership with GSMA Mobile Innovation Hub and DLHK Denpasar, we set out to redesign how waste data is collected, shared, and used across the city.
Field research across 65+ respondents and 45 facilities showed that most facilities collected data but few used it effectively -- more than half still relied on pen and paper, and even digital tools operated in silos. While 100% of surveyed waste banks were willing to share data, nearly all lacked trained personnel or a standardized way to digitize it.
A multi-stakeholder Focus Group Discussion brought together government, private operators, community waste banks, academics, and grassroots groups -- for perhaps the first time -- to co-design solutions rather than simply consult on them.
The result is a scalable model for turning waste management from reactive cleanup into proactive, data-driven climate infrastructure -- one that other Indonesian and Southeast Asian cities can adapt.
